A method for holding metals in the liquid state and a constant temperature in a rotary melting furnace, said metals having been melted by heating achieved via the activation of a burner 6, during said melting the combustion gases are given off and expelled from the furnace through an outlet pipe 8 connected to a typical chimney 10 for expulsion of the gases; after the melting, the burner 6 is halted and the escape of gases from the furnace is blocked, said gases remaining inside it and maintaining a temperature such as to prevent, during a casting, or a waiting period between one work shift and the next, losses of temperature of the molten metal. Said method is implemented in a rotary furnace comprising mobile means 16, 25 to intercept the course of the gases leaving the rotary furnace, able to take up at least two working positions in which they intercept or permit the escape of gases from the furnace.
