Preparation of alternating linear copolymers based on carbon monoxide and at least one compound containing an unsaturation of the alkenyl type which comprises reacting, in a solvent liquid under the operating conditions with or without an anhydrifying agent, the monomers in the presence of: (i) a catalyst of formula [Pd(chel)(chel')]++[A-]2 (I), (ii) a cocatalyst of formula [chel''H+][A'-] (II). chel,chel',chel" = nitrogenated or phosphorated bidentate chelating agent; A-, A'-- = non-coordinating and non esterifiable anion of an acid with pKa less than 2. Also claimed is a process for the preparation of the catalyst.
