Process for the production of ultrafine powders of ZrO2 stabilised with Y2O3 by the low temperature hydrothermal treatment of ternary systems essentially comprising the following stages: a) preparing a suspension containing hydrated ZrO2 gel + Y2O3 + Me2CO3 (where Me = Li, Na, K) + H2O, b) crystallisation treatment, temperature 80-110 degree C, reaction time e.g. 48 hours - 3 days (the reaction time decreases as the crystallisation treatment temperature increases), c) filtration/drying, d) product. The latter may be used as a precursor for the production of solid electrolytes which are mainly used as sensors for gases and in particular oxygen. The invention lies in the scientific field of the production of reactive powders for the advanced ceramics industry. The main problem solved by the invention is the following: the production of reactive ZrO2 powders stabilised with Y2O3 through a single crystallisation treatment performed at a temperature which is so low that it is not found in the literature, all this being performed by means of a very simple process and with the advantage of lesser costs for the ingredients used.
