Novel labelled alpha -aminoacids (I), contg. a carboxy gp., an alpha -amino gp. and a functional side-gp., for use in peptide synthesis, have a gp. (X) detectable by fluorescence or absorption spectroscopy bonded to the side-gp. X is not cleaved during peptide synthesis, and is thus incorporated into the peptide. The alpha -amino and/or carboxy gp. of (I) may be chemically protected or activated. Esp. the amino gp. is protected with fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl (Fmoc) or tert. butoxycarbonyl (Boc). Peptides and proteins contg. (I) residues are also new.
