DUAL-WAVELENGTH PHOTOMETER AND FIBER-OPTIC SENSOR PROBE

A dual wavelength optical sensor for measuring the opticalcharacteristics of sensing films which are responsive to aparticular quantity to be measured. The optical sensorincludes a light source for producing light outputs at twodistinct wavelengths and transmitting twin components of lightto first and second outputs. A time-shared optical fiberreceives the two distinct wavelengths of light from the firstoutput and carries the light on a time-shared basis to a sensorprobe. A sample detector receives the two distinct wavelengthsof light transmitted from the thin sensing film. A referencedetector receives the two distinct wavelengths of light fromthe second output and monitors the output intensity of thelight source. A signal processing system combines themeasurements of the optical characteristics of the thin sensingfilm in response to each of the two distinct wavelengths toprovide measurements which account for changes in the opticalproperties of the thin sensing film.
