A method and apparatus for improving mixing ofliquid in a stirred tube reactor with gas contained orintroduced into the head space above the liquid in thereactor. Draft tubes fixed to or an integral part of theshaft of an agitator system including a radial flowimpeller rotated by the shaft used to stir the liquidextend from above the liquid to a location near theimpeller so that rotation of the shaft and draft tubeinduces flow of gas from the head space through the tubefor introduction into the liquid at or adjacent theimpeller.
