Sow lactation diets supplemented with branched chain amino acids are provided which increase pig and litter weaning weights by improving the nutritional quality of sow's milk. The diets of the invention include a total protein content of from about 12 to 30 % by weight, a total lysine content of at least about 0.9 % by weight, and a total branched chain amino acids content sufficient to give a total branched chain amino acids:lysine ratio of at least 3.24:1.
