Compositions and methods for inhibiting gene expression in biological systems via inhibition of the binding of transcription factors to DNA are disclosed. Inhibition of transcription factor binding to DNA is achieved in accordance with preferred embodiments utilizing oligomers complementary to the targeted DNA. Preferably the oligomers are PNA oligomers. Compositions that have utility as inhibitors of gene expression are disclosed.
