The invention relates to an absorbent article comprising barrier cuffs along its longitudinal sides. The article comprises a topsheet having a central region and marginal regions. The marginal regions extend outwardly below the cuffs. The marginal regions are more hydrophobic than the central region throughout their thickness to prevent wicking of liquids below the cuffs. The topsheet may be comprised of a hydrophilic material, the marginal areas being impregnated with a hydrophobic agent. alternatively, the topsheet may be comprised of a hydrophobic material, the central region being treated with a surfactant.
