The invention relates to an improved process for the surface modification of an electrode for conducting a reaction, particularly an electrochemical reaction. The process of the type wherein is deposited a polymer film at the surface of the electrodes by means of a polymerisation solution is characterized in that an inert compound soluble in a solvent inactive with respect to the polymer is added to the polymerization solution and, after formation of the polymer film, the electrode is placed in contact with said solvent in order to dissolve the inert compound. Thereby, an electrode having a substantially improved permeability is obtained, providing for higher material transfer speed during the reaction.
