The profile (20) is scanned by the beam from the laser (11) deflected by a pivotable mirror (12) through a scanning lens (13). The reflection is picked up by the CCD camera while the beam of laser radiation (16) is swept (17) across the profile in both directions. To improve precision the intersection of the beam and profile is divided by points along a line into sections which are scanned sequentially for measurement of the reflectivity. The optical system is chosen to give a constant spot speed over a length of more than 500 mm.
