Contour extraction method by a mixed approach involving active contours and tracking

An initial straight line contour segment is entered manually (10) on to the digital image screen using a mouse. An algorithm minimising the energy of the contour is then used to deform it (30) to a position of equilibrium which comprises the current segment. A matrix with it's long side orientated at right angles to the manually entered segment and centred at the end of it is used to generate a vector reference correlation nucleus (20). A group of similar matrices arranged in a circle around the same point produce tangent vectors and their correlation with the first vector determines the orientation of the next segment (40).
