the invention relates to a method for balancing the rotor of an alternator of a diesel electric locomotive, the rotor being coupled to an output shaft of the power of a diesel engine.a speed sensor and a vibration sensor are coupled to the rotor to provide output signals representative of the instantaneous rotational speed and the instantaneous amplitude of the rotor vibratoir movement, respectively.in the process of the invention, the rotor is accelerated to a first speed of rotation, and a first preselected rotor imbalance or lump is determined from the speed and vibration signals. the rotor is accelerated to a second rotational speed preset and a second rotor imbalance or lump is determined.the first and second rotor roundness determinations are combined to identify an initial weight of convection and its position in order to minimize the first and second rotor unbalances. the weight determined is installed, and the process is repeated until the imbalance or lug is corrected and the vibrations are below a preselected value.
