Production of low molecular weight homopolymers (I) of N-vinyl-pyrrolidone (NVP) comprises solution polymerisation in aqueous medium in the presence of a radical initiator (II) and a polymerisation regulator (III) with a transfer constant (Cx) of 0.01. Preferably (III) are mercapto compounds, dialkyl sulphides and/or diaryl sulphides, in amounts of 0.1-15 wt% based on monomer.
