Process for operating a catalytic converter, and catalytic converter for implementing said process. In order to ensure that the catalytic converter achieves a constant high effectiveness, a net (3) is arranged on top of the catalytic converter (1). In one particular aspect of the invention, the net (3) continuously or intermittently carries away fly ash particles (7) caught in the net (3). The caught fly ash (7) is conveyed by the moving net (3) to the side of the catalytic converter (1) and is eliminated there. In another aspect of the invention, a purification system formed by a plurality of moving suction rakes (12) is additionally or alternatively mounted on top of the moving net (3) for removing caught fly ash (7) during operation of the catalytic converter.
