The multiple frame format for transmitting digital data in a data transmission system includes a PACKETS section including a high error protection region, a region containing only Reed-Solomon encoded according to error protection means, and a portion including low speed data. The frame format also includes a portion for transmitting the medium speed (audio) and high speed (video) data streams following the PACKETS section. Prior to transmission, the synthesized frames comprising the PACKETS, audio and video portions are interleaved and BLOCK SYNC and FRAME SYNC are added (110). Multiple structure control packet words in the PACKETS part immediately follow the FRAME SYNC. Thus, the FRAME SYNC word defines where interleaving begins. Demultiplexer 156 cooperates with microcontroller 158 of decoders 154 and 155 to decode multiple control structure words and associated PACKETS and output the digital stream to associated output peripheral processor 157.
