Use of L-carnitine, derivatives and antioxidants useful in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular and neurological diseases caused by oxidative stress

The present invention relates to novel therapeutic uses of L-carnitine, alkanoyl L-carnitine and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof useful for the treatment and prevention of diseases and disorders caused by oxidative stress caused by oxygen free radicals. More particularly, the present invention relates to the use of L-crounitine, alkanoyl L-carnitine or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof in combination with a natural lipophilic antioxidant (e.g. vitamin E, vitamin A), a natural hydrophilic antioxidant C, glutathione (GSH) or selenium), or mixtures thereof.
