A superconducting infrared receiver comprises a superconductive substrate secured to a support at a support end and at least one rectangular patch formed on the substrate. The patch is formed on an opposing face having a first electrode and a second electrode overlapping each other. The substrate has a U-shaped slit composed of a pair of side slits and a base slit connecting the side slits. The U-shaped slit surrounds three sides of the patch, and the patch is supported by the substrate in a cantilevered manner at a cantilevered end facing one of the support ends of the substrate. Since the thermal stress applied to the substrate is absorbed by the U-shaped slit when the substrate is exposed to a temperature change, the problematic stress concentration does not occur in the patch. Thus, it is possible to reduce the occurrence of popcorn noise while maintaining a good IR sensitivity.
