The video system includes a preprocessor that decomposes the input video image into co-frequency subbands. The low frequency subband forms a video image smaller than the input image. A standard video encoder compresses low frequency subbands into a first bitstream that conforms to a desired standard. The high frequency subbands are PCM (Pulse Code Modulation)-coded and transmitted as a second bit, a second bitstream via a separate logical channel, or as a first bitstream over the same channel, between video frames of a smaller image. In a receiver of a video system, the standard video decoder decodes the first bit stream, the PMC decoder decodes the high frequency sub-bands, and the post processor combines the low and high frequency sub bands into a video encoder . Embodiments of the present invention include software that is added to the current video codec to quadruple the video image frame size and maintain compatibility with the protocol used by the current video codec.
