The present invention relates to a storage device of a data file that is easy to update in one or more locations, wherein each file in the computer system is associated with a token and can not update any file if the user does not currently have a token. Therefore, there are several data storage devices in the computer facilities of various sites having identical files for the purpose of naming, and only one copy of the file is updated at any one time. The token may be passed to one user to another user who is authorized to hold the current token. Some nodes in the computer system read access to the full version of the file, but each node holding the complete file is recognized as a usable version of the file.
