FIELD: analytical chemistry. SUBSTANCE: method relates to indication and analysis of chlorine, to detection and quantitative determination of chlorine in examined samples. Proposed method can also be used in armed forces and in other branches of industry to estimate depth of propagation of chlorine vapors after accidents at plants and factories, at place of its storage and to conduct ecological expertise of environment. Indication and quantitative determination of chlorine are conducted by process of pumping of analyzed air through silica gel activated with hydrochloric acid solution, by capture of chlorine vapors on given sorbent, by wetting of filling agent with 0.02 per cent solution of o-tolidyne from ampule and by registration of appearance of coloring in filling agent as result of interaction of determined substance with red-ox-indicator. For quantitative determination of chlorine in solution extraction of captured chlorine into extracting agent (distilled water) with addition of sample of extract of coloring agent is conducted under volumetric relation of sample-reagent of 50:3 followed by measurement of optical density of reaction products at wave length $$$=435 nm. Proposed method uses filter - sorbent-activated, open-porous silica gel with grain size equal to 0.2 mm and red-ox-indicator (coloring reagent) in dipolar solvent (acetone) and enables indication and quantitative determination of chlorine in examined air to be conducted. Method results in improvement of basic sorption-technical and metrological characteristics of analysis of examined air. EFFECT: increased limit of detection, accuracy and reproducibility of method, expanded range of determined concentrations, decreased value of analytical background, improved sorption and operational characteristics, simplified indication and quantitative determination of chlorine in air atmosphere.
