To form a signal propagation path from a given input line to a selected output line, member 6 is activated at the intersection point of these lines, and each of the lines is short-circuited at points a quarter-wave distant from the intersection point, creating ideally an uncertain impedance at the interconnection point. Therefore, working signal cannot propagate in any arbitrary direction, except from the given input line to the selected output line.
