The conveyor system has a gripping device (11) which is lowered onto the open container (12) to be gripped until several gripping elements (39,51) are positioned in the container interior. The gripping elements are then moved outwards and brought into contact with the sides of the container and/or are tensioned. The container is finally raised by the gripping arrangement and transported to a final designated destination. The containers are kept in stacks beside each other.
