To gather samples of micro organisms, carried in air, the air is drawn by suction into a germ collector, with a jet to direct the flow to a nutrient base. A container, with a prepared nutrient base, is taken automatically from a magazine in preset extraction cycles, with a number of containers held in the magazine. It is coupled to a sample taking head, with a slit jet, with suction at the jet while the container and the jet head are moved in relation to each other during the set sampling time. The container for the nutrient base is then returned to the magazine. Also claimed is an appts. with a magazine (18) for several nutrient base containers within the housing (10) of the germ collector. A drive (20) for the carrier mechanism (22) transfers a container from the magazine (18) to the sampling head (12) and returns it. The underpressure is provided by a motor-driven air pump (24). The sampling head (12) has a slit jet (26) which, during sampling, is moved to give a relative movement between it and the nutrient base container.
