The identity indicating method uses a loop circuit within the telephone subscriber apparatus for requesting the identity of the calling subscriber and/or the person for which the call is intended. The supplied identity is entered in a memory and indicated acoustically and/or optically in conjunction with the acoustic and/or optical ringing tone. Pref. a speech processor (PR) is used to provide a spoken identification request for the calling subscriber, with recording of the resulting response in a speech memory (SP) for providing a corresponding spoken announcement.
