The device has transport drive unit (22), lifting drive unit (35), and transverse drive unit (40), which are all stationary. Coupling elements are located between transverse drive unit and grab rails (16, 17). The unit moves the rails towards and away from each other. It is in drive connection with the rails only when these are in a fixed position relative to the lifting direction (H), but is disconnected at all other times. The fixed position is the bottom extreme position of the rails. The grab rails are connected to a brake unit. The unit prevents the rails from moving in transverse direction (Q), when these are disconnected from the transverse drive unit.
