Prepn. of multinuclear aromatic cpds. comprises reaction of an aromatic boron cpd. with an aromatic halogen cpd. or an aromatic perfluoroalkylsulphonate in the presence of a base, a nickel or palladium catalyst, a phosphorous contg. ligand and a polyvalent alcohol. The alcohol and phosphorous contg. ligand are both water soluble. The aromatic chlorine cpd. is pref. chlorobenzonitrile. The boron cpd. is pref. p-toluene-boronic acid.
