Before gripping of the uppermost sheet from the stack, several positionable compressed air jets(10) are directed at the division between the uppermost sheet and sheet lying beneath it, and after gripping of the uppermost sheet, and during the upward travel of the suction gripper, a downwards swivelling motion is carried out so that the separation joint is blown upon from a changed direction. The upwards motion of the suction gripper takes place at a low speed at first so that there is sufficient time for the penetration of air between the uppermost sheet and the next one.
