Carbonic acid bis(aminoalkyl)ester bis-hydrochlorides of formula (I) O=C(-O-R1-R2-CH2-NH3Cl)2 are prepd. by (a) reacting a cyano-alcohol of formula HO-R1-R2-CN with COCl2, in presence of tert. N bases and of an inert solvent, at 10-50[deg]C and (b), reacting the carbonic acid bis(cyanoalkyl) ester with H2 at below 60[deg]C, in presence of at least the stoichiometric amt. of a moderately strong acid and of a noble metal catalyst, and addn. of HCl in at least stoichiometric amts. before and/or during and/or after the reaction. R1,R2 = 1-5C divalent alkylene or may form part of a cycloaliphatic ring.
