The method uses a measuring device for providing the actual position of the machine, e.g. a global positioning satellite antenna and at least one further measuring device, providing the value of a given process parameter and/or surface characteristic required for setting the machine. An operating parameter of the machine, e.g. the velocity, or of the machine tool, is adjusted in dependence on a calculated parameter and/or surface characteristic for each position, obtained using parameter and/or surface characteristic data during the previous operation of the machine.
