The measuring system includes a transmitter (1) applying a test signal in a cable to be tested and a receiver (2) detects reflection signals originating from the fault place. The transmitter generates a continuous signal, with which a carrier signal voltage with a fixed carrier frequency is modulated by a superimposed pseudo static noise signal. The pseudo static noise signal is generated by a sequence of pole reversals of a carrier voltage. The time sequence of the reversal operation is stored in a storage. It is cyclically repeated for the formation of a modulation cycle. The transmitter (1) is provided with a carrier frequency generator (5), which has a working frequency of about 10 MHz.
