The invention concerns sulphate-reducing gram-negative bacterial strains which grow under anaerobic conditions at pH-values between 3.9 and 9.5 and temperatures between 3 and 45 DEG C and which reduce sulphate to sulphide, utilize methanol as a carbon and energy source, do not require any carbon or energy source apart from methanol and are tolerant to metals. The invention can be used to decontaminate anaerobic water contaminated with sulphuric acid, metals and radioactive substances, in particular the decontamination of shaft and flood water from abandoned uranium mines or wash water from soil-decontamination plants.
