The device has a heavy particle separator (1) which removes the heavier foreign bodies in the dried wood chips arising from the timber's former uses. The separator has an inclined vibrating sieve (4) which moves the chipped material dropped on to the lower area of the sieve upwards against the slope direction of the sieve. The wood chips are blown by air upwards away from the heavier contaminant particles via a tube (6) past a fan (8) into a chamber where they are abstracted in a closed system from other contaminants using a centrifugal separator (9). The heavy particles are removed from the high end of the sieve. The air is fed back into the underside of the heavy particle separator.
