The use of one or more cpds. chosen from weak water-soluble monocarboxylic acids (I) with a pKa of 3.8-5.1 or their salts, esters, amides or anhydrides as active agents for the regeneration, support, promotion or reinforcement of the natural protective or barrier function of healthy or diseased skin is claimed. (I) is pref. chosen from aliphatic satd. or unsatd. monocarboxylic acids with 1-6 C which are opt. substd. by a phenyl gp. or an OH gp. and their salts, esters, amides or anhydrides. The (I) may be used in conjunction with other skin care agents and assistants such as coenzymes, taurocholic acid, lipid precursors, lipids, antioxidants, moisturisers, water-binding agents, thickeners, fillers, perfume, colourants, emulsifiers, vitamins, preservatives, water, salts, etc.
