The two-coordinate drive involves a stator (2) on which planar coils (3) are arranged next to each other in a matrix format. The coil conductors have a square spiral shape, and can be controlled individually or by segment. A ferromagnetic plate rotor (1) is positioned over the stator, and can move in a planar direction. High energy permanent magnets (4) having a magnetic direction at right angles to the stator are arranged in a cross-shape on the rotor. The size of the stator and the number of coils is related to the required magnitude of rotor travel. The magnets are at least twice as long and about a third as wide as the coils.
