The position detection device (1) contains a radiation source emitting radiation incident on the plane of the marking carrier (3) and a detector arrangement (33) for receiving radiation which has interacted with the marking carrier. The detector arrangement emits a signal dependent on the intensity of a component of the received radiation. The radiation source has an associated focussing lens (19) which focusses the radiation to one or more beams (21) with a dia. when viewed in the plane of the marking carrier which is less than the mean separation distance of the marking regions.
