Proposed is a method for the oxidative dehydrogenation of 4-vinylcyclohexene, in the absence of molecular oxygen, over a redox catalyst used as the oxygen source, the catalyst consisting of a reducible metal oxide selected from the oxides of Bi, Ce, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, In, Mn, Mo, Nb, Ni, Sb, Sn, Pb and V and being regenerated, when it is exhausted, with an oxygen-containing gas or pure oxygen. The catalyst is either rigidly mounted in a preferably tubular reactor or is used in a circulating fluidized bed or in a travelling bed in the form of mobile granules which travel in a circuit between a dehydrogenation chamber and a separate regeneration chamber.
