A device for directly or indirectly applying a liquid or paste-form coating medium to a moving web of especially paper or paper board, comprises: (i) a long, rod-shaped oscillation element (21) located in a chamber (3') in the device, and (ii) an oscillation impulse generator coupled to the end face(s) of the oscillation element. The oscillation element (21) has a cross section whose oscillation-radiating surfaces are parallel to the walls of the chamber enclosing the element (21). Also claimed is a coating process using the device.
