The system has nodal components (1) that can have portions (2) fixed to them at the desired angles and in the desired number, and of shape complementary to the bar ends. The portions can typically be of flat steel, fitting in mating slots in the ends of the bars (5). The latter can be of wood, while the nodal components are of steel, and they can be screwed (4) together. The nodal components can have central bores and fixing devices for lighting equipment etc.
