The marking device has a fixing component (4) which is socket-shaped is provided for driving into the tree. The fixing element has an expansion component (5) coaxially placed in its hollow space (6). The expansion component is axially displaceable and holds the information carrier (3). The expansion component is under the influence of the tree growth and has an outward movement limitation (7) against unauthorised release from the fixing component. The fixing component for drive into the tree is either formed as a nail or a screw. The portion (8) of the expansion component locating within the fixture component is surrounded by a spring (9). The spring is of the pressure type and in its basic adjustment is virtually without tension.
