Production of a printing carrier comprises: (i) forming a base paper from a paper composition containing paper fibre material and mineral filler; and (ii) applying a dye on the paper as covering dye, the dye containing a pigment in aqueous suspension and binder. The dye can be cationically adjusted. Also claimed is an ink jet pressure paper. Preferably, the dye has a zeta potential of +5 to +70 mV. The dye is produced using a cationic pigment slurry, whose pigment has been transferred into a cationic ionogenity by grinding and/or dispersing. 50-100 % of a natural ground CaCO3 with a degree of fineness of at least 60 % less than 2 mm are used. Up to 50 % pigments in the form of kaolin, talc, Al(OH)3, mica and/or gypsum are used. Cationically modified starch, cationically adjusted plastic binder and/or commercial, non-ionogenic polyvinyl alcohol is used as binder, in an amount of up to 11 %, preferably up to 9 %.
