The cable is fed over a guide roller arrangement 1,2 and passes around a dance roller 3 and then passes over a feed unit 6 to enter the winding stage 20 where it is formed into loops. The winding stage has a pair of winding cassettes 21 that are indexed through 180 degrees between a winding position and an unloading position. Each cassette is coupled to a motor drive. When in the unloading position the flange 22 of the cassette is raised and a gripper mechanism 80 is used to extract the loop.
