The cylindrical grinding machine has the workpiece [2], such as a crankshaft or trunnion, supported on centres and is rotated at a controlled speed. At the same time a grinding wheel [4] mounted on a carriage is rotated at high speed while being moved [8] with a controlled motion. A linear position scale is fixed to the carriage to provide precision measurement of movement. Coupled to the drive leadscrew [12] is a tachometer [16] for measurement of speed. A computer receives the carriage position and velocity signals together with angular position measurement of the workpiece and controls carriage feedrate to allow the accurate reproduction of component shape.
