The hollow piston (10) has a main body (40) with a ball joint head (12) at one end and a central pin (45) extending along its axis from the other end, incorporating an axial bore (49). The opposite end of the piston body is fitted with an end cover (41) which is welded in place, for sealing the annular space (47) between the central pin and the inside face of the piston body. The end cover has a flat surface abutting the end face of the piston body, with the radial welding seam extending over the full wall thickness of the piston body and the periphery of the central pin.
