The method provides an early warning of a pump-operating fault by detecting variations in the pulsation of the flow medium on the pressure side of the pump via a measuring sensor, using a pressure sensor outside a pressure collecting pipe (9). An electronic data evaluation device compares actual measured data provided by the sensor with a stored characteristic frequency spectrum obtained for correct operation of the pump. It provides a warning signal when a disparity is indicated. The measuring data from the sensor is evaluated in the frequency range lying between the pulsation maxima of the stored characteristic frequency spectrum.
