The surface of a steel or cast iron component is discontinuously hardened by passing an electrode over the surface and using pulsed electric energy to heat individual zones. The electrode is constantly moved even when no electrical energy is being passed. These heated zones are allowed to cool naturally by dispersion of the heat into the body of the component.
