Winding thread on a cylindrical crossover reel in incremental precision winding comprises continual reduction of the traversing speed between a predetermined upper and lower limit (speed range) in many transient increments with a predetermined winding ratio or K-value (ratio of reel rotation speed to traversing frequency,) and then rising sharply to a higher traversing speed with another predetermined ratio. All the predetermined winding ratios for the course of each winding increment are evaluated and classified with regard to their danger of disturbing the formation of the reel and the traversing speed is sharply changed in accordance with one of the following criteria: It is increased before reaching the lower limit if this increase leads a) to an esp. suitable classified ratio for the course of the step and; b) to a ratio with a better classification than the current one. A variation of the method uses instead the following criteria: The traversing speed is increased a) when the lower limit is reached to a winding ratio optimally classified for the speed range and; b) before reaching the lower limit to a ratio with a better classification than the current one.
