Appts. for purifying and regenerating (principally) kieselguhr-contg. materials includes a substantially horizontal rotary kiln (B) inside which the material is moved from the inlet (10) to the outlet (16), is loosened and teemed, and in which a hot gas stream serves to burn off organic constituents adhering to the kieselguhr. The hot gas stream (9) flows from the outlet (16) to the inlet (10) and the kiln has inside it at least two zones with separate mechanical conveying devices which extend from the inlet and outlet ends towards the inside of the kiln.
