The method involves using pure oxygen as combustion gas for smelting in the furnace. An exhaust gas which is free from NOx and exits from the furnace, is partially led back into the furnace in order to control its inner temperature. The rest of the exhaust gas is discharged to the atmosphere. A part of the returned gas is used to bring the ash into the furnace. The furnace is chosen from a group of furnaces comprising a surface rotary furnace, an inner smelting furnace or a swivelling smelting furnace.
