Small electrical coil elements that are for surface mounting on circuit boards are wound in an automated process. The coils [7] are wound onto ceramic or ferrite elements [2] that are passed end-to-end along a guide track. At a specific location coil winding occurs and the ends of the coil are permanently welded to metal contact pads [4] on the flanges. The welding is carried out by laser [10] welding using a controlled deflection [13] of the beam.
